Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon, a narrow canyon formed by the wear of water rushing through rock and significantly more deep than it is wide. Often times slot canyons are formed in limestone rock and sandstone, although some rock types like basalt and granite are also possible. Only a very small number of creeks will form canyons such as these to to a combination of the characteristics of the regional rainfall and rock in the area.
Horseshoe Bend is located approximately 5 miles downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. This appropriately named location, due to it’s horseshoe-shaped incised meander of the Colorado River, features rock walls containing a variety of hematite, platinum and garnet minerals, to name a few. It is one of the most photographed areas on the Colorado River. While not technically part of the Grand Canyon, it is only 5 miles from the beginning of Grand Canyon National Park; however it is located 140 miles from the South and North Rims.
